Bluetit Diary    Feb 2003 (2)

Is this bird taking up Pilates?

(Actually this behaviour is seen when another bird is thinking of entering the box).

If it wasn't for its tail, it would have fallen over backwards!

Friday 14th February

How clean this box looks compared to the other which has had two seasons' use!

And it now it contains a small piece of hay!

"What's that glassy thing is up there?"

Saturday 15th February

Malcolm has been out of action for the last couple of weeks - a recurrence of an old back problem - hence the scarcity of news over that period.  Fortunately, our birds haven't been doing much either!  Elizabeth has now started her web building apprenticeship.

Here is a mystery picture for you.  Who or what is poking its beak into our bluetits home?  Our best guess is that it is a starling as we have seen starlings in the past taking an interest in a nest box.

This looks like our first nesting wriggle of the year.  It's more normally done when there is some nesting material in place to get pushed around, but at least it appears that one of our birds is getting broody!

To see better pictures of a nesting wriggle, click here and here, and for a fuller description, try here.

Here at last the camera has caught two birds together in the box.  If only we could have seen what happened next!

Until now, i-Catcher has been set to take at most one picture per second.  To improve the chance of more frequent pictures, this has now been increased to two per second.  We hope for some better sequences in the future.
