Wednesday 4th June, 2003

Well, today's supposed to be the big day when some of the chicks leave the nest never to return.  We are writing this at half past five and none of the chicks have shown any sign of fledging yet.  Perhaps tomorrow will be the big day!

Our fears that Scrap may not be getting his fair share of food seem to be unfounded.  This morning, after the feeder on the pergola had been replenished, we saw him gobble down nine whole mealworms!

The woodpecker is still showing far too much interest in the nest box, and we are already considering ways to improve their safety for next year.

Scrap gives his wings a good stretch.

When Fantail comes in he really goes for it - and wins!

He then delivers his sac - but that doesn't stop him trying again less than a second later when Fred comes into the box!

"Can we cope with this lot for much longer?"  One of the nine mealworms Scrap grabbed in the first feeding session of the day.
