Thursday 5th June (part 2)

Suddenly, at about five past eight, it starts getting serious.  First one, and then another chick moves forward and looks up at the exit hole.  You sense the "Shall I go?" question in the air.  When one chick gets particularly bold, but then its courage fails it, it runs back to the nest cup and huddles against the others.  On the left below, the chick at the back had almost left the nest - but not quite.  The picture on the right is the last where all six chicks can still be seen.

"I'm frightened!"

"Does the one nearest the hole go when the music stops?"

"Shall I?"

"Yes - lets go!"
