Bluetit Diary    Mar 2003 (1)

Saturday 1st March, 2003

Fantail has been in and out of her box all morning.  We decided to count her visits by looking carefully through i-Catcher's record.  There were 36 visits by some bird or other between 08:38 and 11:54.  That works out at an average of about one visit every 5½ minutes!

No significant nesting material is being brought into either nest box yet.

While the diary will continue to be kept off line, there will be no updates for the next week as Malcolm will be away.

Tuesday 11th March, 2003

We have a bit of a picture backlog covering the last 10 days which we hope to fill in due course.  As in reality, not much has been happening, for the moment we shall pick up from today.

First of all an update on Box1.  Fantail still seems to be in charge and even occasionally brings some nesting material into the box.  However, she seems to take out almost as much as she brings in, so progress is minimal.

These two images show the current state of affairs in Box1.

In Box2, no nesting progress has been made at all.   All that has happened is that Fluffy is even fluffier!   It is not only her side feathers that are ruffled, but this now appears to be spreading to her back.

This picture shows Fluffy in charge of the box in all her disheveled glory!

This picture shows the typical position of the male when the female is about to enter.

Here we have Fluffy in the corner having just entered, and the male making a hasty exit.

Fluffy still takes a close look at the camera from time to time, as can be seen here.

This is a rather blurred picture of Fluffy practising her nesting wriggle - even though she has no nesting material to arrange!

Fluffy appears to be looking up anxiously at the camera.
