Bluetit Diary    May 2003 (11)

Monday 5th May, 2003 (part 2)

Here's the mealworm feeder - I rigged up our VCR in the dining room so that we could capture images of it.  The hedge does not give an ideal background. Nevertheless, we saw rather more than we expected!

First a bluetit collecting for his mate.  Whether this is Flash or Fred we cannot tell.  Both come to the feeder to collect mealworms.  What we did not expect to see was this cheeky squirrel.  We thought he wouldn't be interested in mealworms.

Earlier today Elizabeth watched Fred's progress after she had put a fresh supply of mealworms in the feeder.  He collected one, flew up into a tree at the right hand side of the garden, and then across to the opposite corner where the nest box is.  He then flitted around from branch to branch calling to Fantail before he delivered the food.  On one occasion Elizabeth timed him with a stopwatch - from collection to delivery took only 39 seconds.

Back to the nest  -  suddenly, Fluffy remembers the camera.
