Bluetit Diary    May 2003 (20)

Friday 9th May, 2003

Another fine day, at least first thing, saw Fantail popping out for a couple of minutes.  All is well when she returns.

"None of you hatched yet then?" says Fantail on returning.

Fred brings more food for Fantail.  "Here's some grub to keep you quiet!"

Soon after they had another kissing session.  We wish we could see such signs of devotion between Flash and Fluffy but to see Flash just feed Fluffy is unusual.  Kissing is unheard of!

Fantail went out again for about 7 minutes at a quarter to nine.  She came back with some more whiskers to line the nest cup.

Fantail always seems to bring something back when she has a trip out of the nest.

Fluffy is still sitting on her five eggs.  Judging by previous years, both birds have another week or so of incubation to go before the eggs start hatching.  With Fluffy, the start of incubation was a very indeterminate affair - she seemed to slide into it, sitting on the eggs more each day.  So her eggs could start hatching a few days earlier or later depending what actually triggers the start of the embryonic chicks growth.  Her five eggs are the smallest clutch we have seen and it will be interesting to see how they turn out.

Fluffy's eggs are still there.

At last we see that Flash hasn't forgotten about Fluffy entirely.

Two and a half hours later, Flash returns with another feed.  Then again after another half hour.

Is it any wonder that Fluffy often leaves the nest?

Saturday 10th May

With both birds incubating, there is not much to talk about so today there will be no pictures.  Only a week to go before the first egg hatches!  Whose will it be, Fantail's or Fluffy's?
