Fantail carefully eats all the eggshell. She holds it firmly against the side of the nest with one foot while pecking small bits off it. We had hoped to see the fifth chick immediately, but as you can see in the second image, this is not the case.
Back to Box1 then - and what do we see, but Fantail holding a large piece of eggshell in her beak! It's two days since the first four eggs hatched - what chance is there for this little scrap? Two days may not sound much - but the time between hatching and fledging is only about seventeen days.
