Bluetit Diary    May 2003 (41)

Sunday 18th May (part 4)

This afternoon Elizabeth watched a bird from Box1 doing something rather intelligent (or instinctive)!  She had just replenished the window feeder, and after a few robin visits a bluetit appeared.  It was neither Fluffy nor Flash (it's very useful being able to distinguish some of the birds in this way).  It spent some time "processing" the mealworm it had chosen, until there was only a small bit left in its beak.  It flew straight to Box1, and went in immediately (none of the flying up to the trees on the right near the house, then the branches near the box as we have always observed previously).  I was in the study updating the website, so neither of us saw this delivery inside the box.  Very soon the bird was back for a repeat performance, although this time it did perch briefly on a nearby branch before it went in.  We hope this was a tiny morsel for the latest chick.  What are its chances of survival, when it is such a late hatchling?  At least there are only four other chicks competing for food.

Flash is looking a bit the worse for wear here.  Only two weeks to go, Flash!

Fluffy delving in the bottom of the nest.

Here, Fluffy moves back so that Flash can feed them himself.

In the second picture, Fluffy levers herself out of the nest cup.  It seems quite a struggle.
