Bluetit Diary    May 2003 (70)

Wednesday 28th May, 2003 (part 4)

Another visit from the woodpecker.  Thank goodness that the chicks were not out of the nest cup at the time!

More chick wing flapping.

Another chick gets out of the nest cup (at the top of the picture).

And another woodpecker visit.  Only about an hour and a half since the last visit!

There has been a lot of discussion on the BBC message board that Elizabeth subscribes to about faecal sacs and when they stop being removed by the parent birds.  Fluffy has been by herself since midday yesterday and has sometimes not been able to keep up with the chicks' output.  As a result, a few poos have ended up on the floor or in the nest cup.  However, when Fluffy has noticed these she has picked them up and taken them out of the nest.  The first of the next two images show Fluffy entering the nest when there is a sac on the floor, and the second shows her leaving with it in her beak - you'll have to trust us that it was the same poo.  It was!

In the left hand image, the white fleck on the floor of the nest just in front of Fluffy's beak is the poo in question.

Fluffy picked this up on her way out and on the right is leaving with it in her beak.

We have examined all the images taken today and none of them show an image of Flash.  Although the chicks are not due to leave until Sunday, they look almost ready to go now.  Will Fluffy be able to cope by herself until they do?
