Bluetit Diary    May 2004 (3)

Wednesday 5th May, 2004

The time is now 6.15pm and there is still no sign of a chick hatching!

The day starts early for Fluffy now.  This is the first picture of the morning taken at 5.53am before the inside light and camera are switched on.

She pops out briefly ...

... and then returns.  The time is now 5.57am!

In a trice, Barney is there, no doubt with some food.

The contrast between Fluffy's feathers and Barney's could not be clearer.  It's a good job her flight feathers do not seem to be affected!

Soon, he is away.  Another day has started - and all before the light in the box is switched on at 6 o'clock!

Neptune is still living in the past.  He cannot seem to get Fantail out of his system.  Presumably, he is genetically programmed to collect food and bring it to the nest, come what may!

This image nearly made me fall off my chair.  This is Neptune, we checked him going into the nest from the outside camera, but this does look like a female doing a nesting wriggle!  We have never seen a male do this before - the poor bird must be totally confused by what is happening to him.

We saw this as it happened - it definitely looked like a nesting wriggle!!

Here he is on his way from the nest box - the tail confirms that it is Neptune, as did the markings on his back when looked at from outside as he went into the box.

Let's hope Fluffy's eggs start hatching tomorrow!
