Bluetit Diary    May 2004 (7)

Fluffy's last chick hatched at about 7 o'clock this morning.

She removed the first half of the eggshell in the same way as she disposed of all the others, by taking it out of the nest.

Just to be different, the second half of the shell, she ate!  Here you can see the shell on the side of the nest beside her.  It has a small piece taken out of it and you can see some white material in Fluffy's beak.  She proceeded to eat the rest of it quite quickly.

Why did she eat this piece and none of the others?

Neptune is still looking for Fantail!  Here he is about to enter the box yet again.

This looks very like another nesting wriggle to us.  If so, another theory bites the dust.  We thought that only females did nesting wriggles - or perhaps Elizabeth is right: Neptune is female!!

This is the typical Neptune pose - waiting for Fantail!
