Bluetit Diary    Apr 2005 (35)

Sunday 24th April, 2005

We didn't see it, but Babe must have laid her first egg on the morning of April 22nd, the morning after she roosted in the box overnight for the first time.  We wondered whether she would, but she hid the egg so carefully that we caught no sign of any egg at all that day.

You know we had been wondering what had happened to Boris as we had only seen him come to feed Kelly a couple of times while she was sitting on the eggs.  We needn't have worried, this morning he seemed to be coming in every few minutes!

This was the first feed we caught sight of.  The time is 6.56am

It's now 5 past 7 and Boris is back with some more food.  Sometimes we think that Kelly is snuggled down so much in the nest cup that she will disappear entirely!

A minute later, he is back again - and he keeps this up for most of the morning!

Kelly has a good partner there in Boris!

This was the first sign of Babe's eggs that we saw this morning.  At the time we were arguing about whether it was one or two!

I was pretty sure after seeing this that we had two eggs!

But was this three?  It didn't seem likely and the picture was doubtful to say the least.

No!  This is not Babe - it's Kelly!  She has left her eggs in a perfect circle as she leaves the nest box.

Boris is still at it - as birds can't talk, you have to wonder about how Boris cottoned on so quickly that Kelly needed feeding so often.
