Bluetit Diary    Apr 2005 (8)

Sunday 3rd April (part2)

Our other main theme is again from Box1, but is rather different.  Until this year, we had only seen the bluetits mating once and that was in the trees beside the nest box.  Today is the second time this has taken place inside the nest box and because it is so unusual, we are concerned that it may mean that the pair do not see this box as a potential nesting site.  The fact that the male, rather than the female is roosting in the box adds to this feeling.

The story starts with Carlos perching on top of the box, calling to his mate.

Directly Megan makes an appearance, he goes inside the box.

Having seen this before, we can recognise this behaviour and know what is on his mind!

Still displaying, he looks out of the box to see where Megan is.

You can see him looking out as Megan flies onto the nest box hole.

As a result, Carlos drops down to the floor of the box expecting that Megan will come in to him.

Sure enough, she does.  Although she hesitates a short while on the entrance.
