Bluetit Diary    Mar 2005 (2)

Wednesday 2nd March, 2005

Another mixed day.  Some sunny periods but also some showers.  The morning was the best time of the day and it is from about a quarter to 10 that today's sequence is taken.

At just before 9:45 a male came to check out Box1.

You can see the broad band around his head.

He stayed there a short while and then at 9:45:11 he entered the box.

Just before entering, he had a good look about him, presumably to check that his partner was around.

Less than a second after he had entered the box, his partner came to the nest box hole.  (With my new PC I am now getting 4 or even 5 images per second!).

However, although the male now inside was clearly expecting her to enter, she doesn't and at 9:45:13 she flies off instead.

Here you can see the male inside the box crouching down in the expectation that the female will enter and join him inside.

There goes the female!  Another case of wingless flying!!

At 9:45:22 the male gets fed up with waiting and pops back up onto the nest box hole to see where she is.  He clearly spots her returning as he drops back down to the floor again.

By 9:45:25 she comes back.

Again, she refuses to enter, remaining perched on the nest box entrance hole.

By 9:45:31 the male has had enough, giving the female a surprise as he decides to leave the box in a hurry!

She leaves soon after!
