Bluetit Diary    May 2005 (27)

Monday 30th May, 2005

Another day, and the three chicks are still with us.  Surely this must be the day for them - and for us all!

"I'm a humming bird!"

One of the chicks flexes its wings again.

"Do you think he's going?"  At this stage we thought it might!

But no - its courage failed it.

During this time, Babe and Ferdinand are bringing in food as often as they always used to.

Here Scrap has another go.  You will see from a picture I took of him outside the nest later today what a poor specimen he is.  However, he doesn't want in courage and fighting spirit - which is presumably why has has survived so long and not died earlier as his sibling did.

Scrap decides he is not quite ready yet!

Here you can see one of the chicks looking out while Babe is in the nest box.  The parents do appear to try to encourage their chicks to leave by, for example, calling from outside.  Has Babe done anything here to prompt her chick to hop onto the hole?

Well, whatever encouragement was give, it wasn't enough!  I think the chick looks a bit sheepish here.
