Bluetit Diary    Jan 2006 (9)

Saturday 21st January, 2006

Box1 is not entered by bluetits, or any other bird for that matter, as frequently as is Box2, but here is one of the few visits it got today.

It's 8.33am and Box1 is getting checked out by a bluetit.  I have only just switched on and the inside camera hasn't been started yet, so we don't know when it left the box.

His partner comes to support him.  This shot was taken about 9 seconds later when we presume that the bluetit inside had dropped back down to the floor of the nest box.  It had left by 8.34!

This is a very late picture taken in Box2 yesterday.  It is 5pm and pretty dark outside.  Note that the floor of the box is clean and the bluetit is perched on the exit hole but not actually leaving.

Shortly after this we noted that it flew up to the top of the nest box where the camera is, partially blocking the view of the floor of the box.

It was when it was here, that we switched off the camera for the night.

This is a shot taken of the first visit to the box after the cameras had been switched on.

Here you can see some droppings left on the floor of the box, just to the left of the bluetit.  As they were not there when we switched off last night, they are signs that a bird actually did roost in the box overnight.

The bluetit has noticed them but doesn't do anything about them.

It's now 10 minutes later and the box has another visitor.  This is a different bird - the colour of its back feathers is a bit different, and they are less neatly tucked against its body - yes, this is a fluffier bluetit!

You can see this better in this picture.  The birds breast feathers are standing proud of its body, particularly on its right hand side.

Thirty seconds later, this bird left the box.
