Bluetit Diary    Jun 2006 (2)

Thursday 1st June (part2)

Dad brings some food for the remaining three chicks.  They have not been forgotten.

Four minutes later he is back again.  Clearly these last three chicks are not quite as eager as the first five!

Here it looks as though a sixth chick is about to go.

But no - it couldn't face it.  The chick who looked out in the picture above is now crouched low at the side of the box.  Was it frightened by its own boldness?

But three minutes later it is back again.  And this time it flew!  This is the last picture we have of it.

After 5 chicks in 4 minutes, the next chick took 15 minutes!

We're now down to the last two chicks.  Neither looks particularly keen to fledge!

Three minutes after the sixth chick, the seventh looks as though it is on its way.

Almost!

Away he goes - and flying well too (well at least it flew upwards!)

The last chick is now all alone.

Is this the first time this chick has looked outside?  We can only guess but there was always at least one who was at the bottom of every heap of chicks in the nest - and that was probably this chick!

A parent comes again and feeds it at the nest box hole.

Nearly!

But that was too much for this chick to bear.  It drops back into the nest box and tries to find something to cuddle - and as there is nobody else in the nest box it huddles up into the corner.

Good old Ben.  Here he is with some food to console the chick.

Suddenly, with no warning, the last chick goes back onto the exit hole ...

This is the last shot we have of the last chick.

The nest is empty again.

A parent comes with some food - just in case ...

... but leaves without going inside as (s)he realises that the nest is empty.

So for us, and for our interested readers, it's all over again for another year!
