Bluetit Diary    Mar 2006 (10)

Thursday 23rd March (part3)

The male comes again to give his support - for what it's worth!  He didn't stay around last time she needed him!!

"Is it nice in there dear?" he seems to be saying!

See the male's head feathers raised in full display.

The next thing that happens is that she goes into the box and he comes down onto the hole himself.

Then he has to leave in a hurry as the female emerges from the box at high speed!

Perhaps we have two pairs interested in the box, the flighty but bold one who spends a lot of time taking moss into and out of the box, and the rather more timid pair who take for ever to decide whether they like what they see or not.

Or perhaps it's one male with two females, trying to persuade each of the females that he is the one for them?

I guess we will find out in due course!

It's now only about 6 or 7 minutes after the timid bird looked around and the bolder one is back with more nesting material - or is there only one female really?

Once she's in she spreads the moss around with a shake of her head when she releases it.

She gives it a wriggle before she leaves.

Soon she's back with some more - and she makes a nice picture too!

Another trip with more moss - perhaps she means it this time?

Well, she can bring it in - but she doesn't seem to be getting more in the nest box!

And this is why - she takes as much out as she brings in!

Still, all this is quite normal behaviour.  Each year we get exasperated by the female bluetits playing silly games with the nesting material - and then suddenly, they decide the time has come and they finish the nest in a few days.

We shall see!
