Bluetit Diary    May 2006 (13)

Sunday 21st May, 2006

A better day today - all the remaining chicks seem to be alive and well!

Claire, Sam and their two remaining chicks.

At this stage the chicks seem to be permanently hungry - even though there are only two of them!

The chicks are also growing rapidly.  Here you can see that the wing feathers are already quite large.  It won't be long now before they are practising flapping their wings.

Another picture showing the great tit chicks' wing development.  This chick is determined to get the food on offer.

You may not have noticed the tail sticking up in the top right hand side of this picture.  This is all you can see of Claire who is trying her best to keep the nest clean.

The bird that you can see most of is a chick!

Another wing streatch.

Me - me!  No me!!

The chicks are looking increasingly fierce as the time for them to fledge draws closer.

It's my turn!

What on earth is Claire up to here?  She seems to have decided that the chicks need some more bedding.  Perhaps it's the great amount of space around them in the nest cup that has prompted this unusual behaviour.  We have never had such a small clutch before.

I think the chicks want food - not bedding!

"Oh all right then!"

Claire left the fluffy material on the side and went off to collect food instead.

But it was some time before she came back with some.

Eager chick.

Claire is again trying to do the cleaning while the chicks have other thoughts on their minds!

Look at them.  They appear to be permanently starving!
