Bluetit Diary    May 2006 (15)

Thursday 25th May, 2006

The great tit chicks will be gone soon.  Tomorrow it will be 20 days since they started hatching - the average period of time before chicks fledge.  Having said that, they have so far shown little sign of wing flapping, a necessary precursor  to fledging so perhaps we will have them a little longer.

One of Claire's chicks seems to be rather more advanced in its development than the other.  This chick is often seen out of the nest cup as is shown here.

Both chicks are still eager for food - especially first thing in the morning.

One of the chicks is again out of the nest cup.  Often this seems to stimulate the other chick to beg for food - I suppose the sight of an almost adult sized great tit in the nest does the trick.

A good wing stretch - again the other chick is automatically begging for food.

The parent seems taken aback by the ferocity of the chicks' begging!

This chick was so disappointed at not getting the food that it almost followed its parent out of the nest box!

As you can see, Elizabeth has recently put out some mealworms.  Claire seems to have grabbed about four of them here!

There's still one left!
