Bluetit Diary    May 2006 (18)

Monday 29th May, 2006

We're starting to expect the chicks to fledge at any time.  This means that we are constantly counting heads to make sure that we haven't missed the great event.  In reality, they probably won't go until Tuesday or Wednesday but you can never be sure!

The day starts early as usual.  It is 5.18am and this is the first feed of the morning.

And at this time in the morning, this is the inevitable result! (The parent is leaving with a faecal sac.)

At last an image where you can see that there are still eight chicks!

The time is 5.52am

Here we have a feed showing all eight chicks - a much more unusual occurrence as usually at least one chick gets buried in the rush for the food.

Another feed showing all eight chicks - and this time it's Dad with the food.

If you can only see seven chicks you are probably missing the top one which is ignoring Dad and looking away from the centre of the nest.

The eight chicks composed for a family photograph!

Another feed from Dad.

Today we've had quite a lot of wing flapping.  It must be nearly fledging time.

The chicks need to get plenty of such exercise to build up their flight muscles.  They only get one chance outside and must be as prepared as they can be.  Once they are through that hole they never return!

The chick has finished flapping - and has just realised he is well and truly out of the nest cup ...

... and hurries back to join the rest of the mob!

Dad brings a mealworm.

He seems to give it to one of the chicks ...

... but he doesn't seem to want to let go!

More wing flapping.

Mum gives the mob a good talking to.  You can see her with her arm (well leg actually!) around one of the chicks shoulders.

"It's about time you lot left home"

Dad adds his bit too.  He appears to have their attention more than Kate did.

More wing flapping.

This flap went on for a long time - well 10 seconds anyway!

They are all looking fit and ready to go.  The weather forecast for tomorrow is good.  Will tomorrow be F(ledge!) day?
