Bluetit Diary    May 2006 (3)

Saturday 6th May (part2)

Eureka!  Claire's first egg has hatched out!!

This was the day that Claire's eggs were due to start hatching - and true to form, she came up with the goods.

At about twenty past six all 5 eggs were still intact as this picture clearly shows.

Suddenly, at 6.52pm, we noticed that Claire had a piece of eggshell in her beak!

She doesn't seem to know what to do with it to start with.

We were wondering whether she would fly out with it.

Suddenly we realised that the piece of shell looked smaller - she must have decided to eat it!

We had to wait over a quarter of an hour before we could see what she had been hiding. There in the nest cup was a hatched chick - a wriggling pink blob amongst the remaining four eggs!

It looks so tiny and vulnerable that it makes one wonder how so many chicks survive to fledge!

A couple of minutes later and Claire is back.

As if by magic, Sam appears with some food for the new chick which he dutifully passes to Claire.

That's about it for today - the light is switched off just after 7.30pm.

I wonder how many more chicks will hatch before we turn on tomorrow morning!
