Bluetit Diary    Apr 2007 (26)

Sunday 29th April, 2007

We were hoping to see that the last egg had hatched out overnight.  However, that hope was quickly dashed when we saw the egg still in the nest cup.  After all though, one egg was laid a day after Greta had started incubating.  Perhaps we shouldn't give up too soon!

Gustaf brings some food for the chicks.  He passes it to Greta ...

... who tries to get a chick interested in taking it.  She does this by clucking at the chicks repeatedly.

Gustaf watches intently.  He appears very interested in what is going on.

Perhaps this is the way dads find out what to do when mum is not in the nest when he brings some food.

Ah!  You can still see an egg!  The last one cannot have hatched yet - I wonder whether it will.

About a minute later, both parents leave the nest box showing us 5 chicks and one unhatched egg.

When Gustaf comes into the nest box, he always goes to his right (ie to the bottom of our picture).  Here he has some food for the chicks.

He is clearly disconcerted by the fact that Greta is not at home.  Nearly a minute later he is still there with the food still in his beak.

The next time he comes to the nest he finds Greta there.

He is much happier when he can pass the food to her to give to the chicks.
