Bluetit Diary    Apr 2007 (28)

Sunday 29th April (part3)

Back to Greta and Gustaf.

It's now late afternoon and Gustaf is making another visit with some food.   But what's this - is that egg still in one piece?

To think we ever doubted Gustaf!  He seems to be turning out very well.

It's only ten minutes later, but here is Greta picking up a piece of egg shell.  The last egg must have hatched!  We had almost given up on it too.

Greta eats the egg shell again.

When Gustaf come in with more food, Greta is snuggled down on the chicks.  If it is possible for a bird to look smug in this position, she does!

She turns to take the food from Gustaf and then tries to find a chick to take it from her.

At this stage, the parents find no difficulty in satisfying the chicks' appetites - it will be a different story later!

After feeding the chicks, both parents leave the nest showing us the 6 chicks. (At least I presume there are six chicks there - I certainly couldn't count them!)

I mentioned earlier that Gustaf always enters the nest box by keeping to his right.  Greta always keeps to the left (the top of our picture.)

At least this pattern of behaviour minimises collisions!

A last shot showing the 6 chicks on their own.
