Wednesday 21st March, 2007

At last we have had several sightings of Angus, Abby's partner!

From what happens later, we have decided that this must be Angus.

Angus from the side.

Angus crouches down as Abby comes into the box.

The switchover takes place.

Abby is left by herself in the box.

"He didn't need to go quite so quickly!" says Abby.

Nearly 2 hours later, a similar thing happens.

The bird inside, Angus? hears another bird outside the box.

He leaps towards the camera to get out of the way.

With this box, there are more options than just to crouch down!

In comes Abby.

Angus is still up near the camera - well out of the way.

He disappears so quickly that even these cameras do not catch a shot of him going!

Abby is again left wondering why he went so quickly!

Another shot of Abby.  there seem to be some white spots on the ends of her wing weathers that might help to distinguish her from Angus.  You can see that Angus does not have these so strongly marked in the first picture on this page.  Also if you look at the fourth picture again you can see both birds' backs side by side.

It's now nearly 1 o'clock and again Angus is in the nest box.

See the feathers on Angus's back - there is little or no sign of white wing tips.

Abby is now inside and Angus is as usual, departing at top speed.  However will Abby produce fertile eggs if this is as close as the two birds get to each other!

Abby by herself in the nest box again.  Note the white spots on the tips of her wings that you can see on her back.

"Why is he always avoiding me?"
