Bluetit Diary    Apr 2008 (11)

Wednesday 23rd April, 2008

We set the system to come on early this morning in the hope of catching another sight of Gelda's eggs.  We weren't too disappointed!

This is the view of Gelda's nest that greeted us.  If you look carefully, I think you can make out two eggs!

Gelda seems very good at keeping everything under wraps!

I think they are slightly clearer her.

Well done Gelda.  Perhaps you're not quite so boring now!

Abby is still eggless!

At least she is not partnerless.  Angus can frequently be seen in and around the nest box.

Sally has managed to find lots of beautiful feathers to decorate her nest.  She uses them most effectively to cover the eggs when she leaves the box during the day.

Sally in housekeeping mode.  Female bluetits are forever searching for mites and dirt at the bottom of the nest.

Sally still at it!

What's this then at Box3?  The great tit has returned to investigate the nest box again.

He goes into the box fairly quickly - almost as though he felt at home here!

Abby and Angus had better watch out!

He doesn't stay long this time though.

What did I say - he didn't fly away but merely turned round and re-entered the box.

A shot of the great tit inside the box.

After 40 seconds, he leaves again.  This shot shows that he has a fairly broad black stripe down his front - this confirms that this bird is probably male.

Twenty seconds later and he is back again.  Or is this the female?

Although this bird looks as though it is about to enter the box, it doesn't.

After a short period of hesitation, it flies off again.

Finally, to end on a high note - here is a shot of Sally's six eggs towards the end of the day.

I wonder how many more she will lay?
