Bluetit Diary    Mar 2008 (9)

Thursday 27th March, 2008

Both Abby and Angus have been seen around Box3 quite often today.  ( For those who have not read yesterday's post, we are calling the bluetits occupying Box3 Abby and Angus in memory of the 8 chicks that that pair lost last year.  We do not expect that they are the same birds.  Possible, yes - but unlikely.)

We start with one bird, presumably Angus, inside Box3.

Abby joins her partner but flies up towards the side mounted camera as she enters the box.

She lands on the slope that leads up to the camera lens.  As a result, she obscures the view of Angus, although you can see his tail.

Nearly an hour later, both birds are back in the box again.  Here again you can see Angus crouching down to avoid Abby as she comes in.

This is the start of a the third occasion that Abby and Angus are both inside Box3 together.

Although Angus is standing on tip toe to see whether Abby is coming in ...

... he crouches down as usual when she makes her entrance.

Again, Abby lands on the slope, well out of the way of Angus.  This must be a bigger hole than bluetits normally use for their nesting sites.

I wonder what bluetits did before man put up nest boxes for them?

Finally, Abby gives a celebratory nesting wriggle to end this box's story for the day.

(Still no nesting material though!)
