Bluetit Diary    Feb 2009 (1)

Monday 2nd February, 2009

Last night we had the biggest fall of snow for years!

This was the sight that greeted us when we got up this morning.

The bird table was covered too!

It all reminds us of the winter of 1962/3 when we were living in Yateley, Hants.  Snow lay on the ground that winter from the end of December until March!  The thaw finally came on 6th March which was the first day of the year that there was not a frost anywhere in Britain.  See The Winter of 1963 for more details!

I can also remember the winter of 1947 (just!) which although was not quite as cold as 1963, resulted on more snow falling.  In addition, it was followed by a record wet March which resulted in a great deal of flooding.  I can remember standing near St Mary's Church at Hampton and looking at the Thames which had risen almost to the height of the roadway.  Many of the inhabited islands in the river near there were completely covered with water - a disaster for those living there.  See The Winter of 1947 if you are interested in more details of this winter.

Things for our birds improved as soon as Elizabeth could get her boots on and by 10 to 8 a robin was tucking into food that she had put out for them on the bird table.

The first bird back on the feeder was a robin, with a bluetit not far behind.

It didn't take long, though, before the fat feeder was busier that I can remember!
