Bluetit Diary    May 2009 (11)

Wednesday 13th May, 2009

It still looks as though a pair of great tits is house hunting.

Too late for that box - why don't you try Box3?

Unfortunately, it's not just great tits that are hunting - and a GSW is a far more dangerous species for a bluetit than is a great tit!

As well as having a look in Box1 and Box2, this woodpecker has caught sight of the unused Box3!

They are lovely birds.  What a pity they also predate bluetits!

Well, at least there are no chicks at risk here!

Towards the end of the day, there was a valiant attempt by Bella to defend her nest box from a woodpecker.  Thanks to Andy Davies who was watching in Tokyo, and who gave us feedback about this sequence, we can show it below.

We start at 6:07pm by seeing the woody back on the outside of Box2.

Suddenly, while his attention is on looking inside the box, he is attacked from behind by Bella.  (Of course it might have been Bertie, we cannot tell.)

The woodpecker turns to deal with this pest ...

... which must be a minor thing to a bird of the woodpecker's size ...

... but which causes it to fall off nevertheless!  A few seconds later it is flying back to the nest box hole.

Again, the woodpecker has to turn to deal with Bella.

In this melee, you can just make out Bella battling for her chicks!  She seems to have done the trick though, the woodpecker has let go of the nest box in order to deal with Bella.

Twenty five seconds later the woody has gone and Bella rushes in to comfort the chicks.

The woodpecker hasn't yet returned!
