Bluetit Diary    May 2009 (27)

Sunday 31st May, 2009

The woodpecker was back today - though he seems to have got more than he bargained for!

Fay with her two chicks.  They are growing up fast.

Just before half past nine this morning, we had another visit from the woodpecker.

He checks to see whether the chicks are still there.

At this stage, the chicks are still thinking it's more food coming.

Spotty tries to reach them.

The chicks cower down.

Spotty suddenly realises that Fay is coming.

He turns to meet her as she appears to attack him head on!

You can see her head in the bottom right of the picture.

Amazingly, she appears to floor him!

In the picture you can see Fay having a go at Spotty, who appears to be hanging from the nest box hole, upside down, with his white and pink tinged belly facing the camera.  A most undignified posture for a woodpecker!

In the nest shot, he has gone.

Good for Fay!  These bluetits are gutsy little birds aren't they!

Towards the end of the day, the chicks' life looks calm and peaceful.

Mum is still trying to feed them ...

... with mealworms put out by Elizabeth.

In fact, the chicks are so full they they appear to show little interest in more food.

For some time she tries to get them to take the mealworm, but eventually has to give up and take it out again.

She almost immediately turns around and tries again, but both chicks want to go to sleep rather than try to stuff down still more food.

So she has to take the mealworm out yet again.

Only a few days to go now.
