Bluetit Diary    May 2009 (4)

Monday 4th May, 2009

Fay is slipping.  She has left the eggs uncovered for a change; and you can clearly make out 9 eggs!  She must have laid another first thing this morning.

There are still unhatched eggs in Bella's nest.  At least two from this picture.

Bertie is carrying another little green caterpillar which he is passing over to Bella.

From this shot it is pretty clear that three of Bella's eggs have not yet hatched.  The first eggs started hatching nearly 24 hours ago so it is not surprising that there are one or two that have not yet hatched.

Box2 is frequently troubled by a squirrel.  Here you can see Bella's reaction to hearing something crawling around on the roof of her nest box.

And this is the culprit.

I'm not sure what real danger there is from a squirrel on the roof.  The box is well built of thick marine ply and it would take quite a lot of chewing to get through to the chicks.  I suppose a squirrel could stick a paw through the hole as a cat did a few years ago, but is it likely to catch anything?

We will just have to keep our fingers crossed.

This looks like there are three eggs left still.  (It is now twenty past eight in the morning.)

Another visit from the squirrel.

Poor Bella.  There is really nothing she can do about it either!

The squirrel departs - probably after Elizabeth has scared it away!

It is now a quarter past seven in the evening and Bertie brings in yet another feed for Bella or her chicks.

As Bella moves off her brood, there is no sign of any unhatched eggs.  Is that because they have now hatched or because they have been buried?  We will probably have to wait until tomorrow to find out as the system switches off in a few minutes!
