Bluetit Diary    May 2009 (9)

We had another visit from the woodpecker this morning!

We start with a good view of Bella's chicks.  You can count 11 of them - nine gapes and two smaller ones with their beaks closed.

It isn't surprising that two look a bit smaller than the others - they hatched out a couple of days after the bulk of the chicks.

It looks as though a robin has successfully raised a brood of chicks near here.  You can just make out a chick robin on the roof of Box1.

Here is the woodpecker - the male bird again.

He puts his head well and truly into the nest box ...

... but still seems a little way from the nest cup.  The chicks are safe for now!

One frustrated woodpecker.  You can see his beak open - uttering bloodthirsty calls no doubt.

The chicks appear to think that someone has come to feed them - as opposed to feed off them!

After the woodpecker left it was 13 minutes before Bella returned.

Whether this was coincidence, or Bella waiting until she was certain the coast was clear is impossible to say!
