Bluetit Diary    Feb 2010 (3)

Thursday 18th February, 2010

Another of the hazards that our birds face.

Unfortunately, squirrels also appear to be so inquisitive that they will chew through video cables given half a chance!

Box3 has had some attention today.

First a bluetit goes inside.

Of course, he first goes onto the ledge that is just beneath the camera.  As a result, he is too close to the camera to get a proper picture!

Then he looks at the view from the entrance hole.  It doesn't look very pretty to our eyes, but for a bluetit, the thick hornbeam hedge makes it an area safe from predators.

Then he goes on his way.

Later, a great tit cautiously approaches the box.  Here he has perched on the wall next to the box.

His next move is onto the edge of the box itself.

At last he decides to look inside ...

... and then he enters the box.

What's up there then?

This time it's the great tit's turn to stand on the ledge.

Aha!  We've seen this bird before.  This is Ferdinand, the tailless great tit.

He doesn't stay long either.  We'd better keep our fingers crossed that one of these birds decides to nest here.

Off he goes.
