Bluetit Diary    Jan 2010 (12)

Saturday 30th January (part2)

This pair look pretty settled as owners of Box2.  We shall have to give them names!  When you think how cold the weather is, we can't help but wonder what it is that starts the nesting process.  Presumably, it's more to do with the increasing length of the day rather than anything else.

This pattern was repeated several times during the day.  Here is another time both birds were in the box together 35 minutes later.

The male is at the top of the picture and the female at the bottom.

This time the female appears to have entered the box without the male going inside first.

Nearly three hours have passed and during that time there have been several short visits to the box by both the male and the female.

Here is the male inside the box again.

Fifteen seconds later, the female follows.

For a short time, both birds are in the box together.

Again, the male doesn't hang about.  He leaves only a couple of seconds after the arrival of the female.

Again, she appears to be calling to him.

So again, the female is left by herself inside the nest box.

She doesn't stay long though, and leaves almost immediately.

Another visit by both birds, male first followed by the female.  This visit is about half an hour later than the last.

What's she saying to him?

It's enough to put the wind up the male though!  No, this isn't a male doing a nesting wriggle, but just a clumsy way of trying to get away outside (I think!)

Anyway, he goes immediately after!

The prospects look good for Box2.  Still, there's many a slip ...  Keep your fingers crossed for us!
