Bluetit Diary    Jun 2010 (1)

Tuesday 1st June, 2010

Well, my forecast for when Rosie's chicks would fledge was a couple of days out, so how will my guess for Donna's chicks, namely 3rd June, turn out?

Donna and her three chicks.

I'm amazed at how well Donna has done with these three.  Thank goodness none of the other eggs hatched, as surely even she would have found any more just too much to cope with.

All three chicks seem healthy and active.  They surely must fledge soon!

We have often seen another bluetit coming to the nest box, but never going in.

Here he is again.

His head has that rugged look of a male bluetit, but really that's just an educated guess.

If it is a male, could it be Mick wondering about his offspring?  Or is that just being anthropomorphic?  Whether it is or not, this bird's repeated visits are difficult to explain.

Donna has just found the latest batch of mealworms that Elizabeth has put out for her.

You'd think these chicks were starving judging by the reception they give her!

Donna still has to keep up with her other parental duties!

It's now early afternoon, and still there is no sign of these chicks fledging.

In fact you sometimes get the impression that they would be quite content to stay here for days yet!

And then Donna comes in with some food, and they all go mad trying to be the one that gets it!

Time for another kip.

It's nearly the end of another day, but this chick seems to have made up its mind that tomorrow is the time to leave the nest.

We shall see!
