Bluetit Diary    Apr 2011 (7)

Friday 15th April, 2011

I think there is a conspiracy among the birds this year to keep their eggs hidden.

This looks like four eggs to me.  This means that Joy laid her first egg on Tuesday 12th, tying with Amy.  Perhaps she will show us another soon and be declared the outright winner!

Zoe has produced another egg, so she is now on two.

I think this is when an egg is being laid in Box1.  Amy (if it is she!) stays in the same position for nearly thee minutes, just rocking back and forward as though she were squeezing the egg out.  You cannot see this in a sequence of still images but if you watch the replay today today from about 7:27 until 7:31 you will see what I mean.

This is her in the back position ...

... and this is where she is when she rocks forward.

Finally after about 3 minutes it is over and she can get on with her life again!

However, something odd is going on in Box1.  Here is Joe giving Amy some food.

Here he again, this time at just past one o'clock.

Suddenly, just after Joe has departed, another bluetit comes into the box and instantly yet another fight starts.  The pictures are rather blurred because the birds are moving so rapidly.

I'm afraid I don't know which bird is which!  I rather suspect that the one on its back to the top right of the picture is Amy, but I cannot be sure.

The fight continues.

Where is Joe when Amy needs him?  Judging from what we have seen this year, the females seem to do as much fighting as the males!

No, they aren't mating!  We have seen mating take place in a box on several occasions and although it's pretty violent, it's nothing like this.  They don't do it face to face to start with!

The newcomer seems to be giving Amy a hard time when all of a sudden ...

... it turns and departs!

What on earth was the fight all in aid of?

Now that things have calmed down, Joe turns up again with a food offering.

That's the last of the excitement today!
