Bluetit Diary    Dec 2010 (5)

Tuesday 28th December 2010

You would have thought that the fight in Box3 on Christmas Day would have settled the matter between Harry and Will, but not a bit of it.  For most of the day it is clear that something is up and in the afternoon, we have another round between the two birds.

Here is Harry in his box at just after 9am.

Is this Will and Harry?  And if so, which is which?  Or could one of these two birds be another bird entirely, possibly a female - the probable cause of all the trouble!

Or even, could Harry really be Harriett?  We have seen little sign of any male characteristics in Harry's behaviour.  He has exhibited no real aggression; Harry appears to wait for events to happen rather than take the initiative, and has shown very few signs of the male crest, clearly visible in Will when he is fighting.

Perhaps all they are fighting over is a good place to roost!

Another beautiful picture of Harry coming into land on the entrance to the box.

It is now 2:22pm.  There has been a lot of posing and posturing outside Box3 today, but since the first picture of Harry at the top of this page, which was taken at 9:03am, neither bird has entered the box until now.

This is Harry approaching the box.

He lands and goes straight inside.

A minute later Will appears.

He also lands on the entrance hole ...

... and immediately, Harry grabs one of his claws in his beak!

In the ensuing tussle, Harry is in danger of being pulled out of the box ...

... but Will loses his footing ...

... and this enables Harry to recover and start pulling Will's leg into the box.

You can see Will's leg here in Harry's beak.
