Bluetit Diary    May 2011 (10)

I though it would be a good idea to start today's entry by checking how many chicks each nest box contained.

Box1 seems to have seven chicks.  I've seen seven on many occasions but I have never seen more than this.  That means that there are also seven eggs at the bottom of the nest cup that have either never hatched, or have hatched but the chick subsequently died and whose body was removed by Amy.

Probably, most of them have never hatched.  Perhaps the eggs laid by the second female were not fertile?

Box2 still has all 10 chicks alive and well.  Unfortunately, a spider's web partially obscures the view of the nest, but you can clearly see 10 beaks here.

Ten out of ten for Joy and Dave then!

This picture of Box3 is a great shot and shows us that Zoe has at least 8 chicks.  However, it is probably not taken from the best position for doing a head count of the chicks!

This picture, taken at more or less the same time from the top camera shows us nine chicks - the most I have ever seen in this nest.  As Zoe laid 10 eggs, either one chick died or one egg failed to hatch.  I'll find out in the autumn when I clean out the nest box.
