Bluetit Diary    May 2011 (22)

The remaining chicks must surely fledge today?

At just after half past six, which is when the cameras are automatically  switched on, there are only two chicks left in the box.  One must have got an early start.

A few minutes later, one of them appears to be facing the fact that today's the day to leave the nest.

Up onto the hole ...

... feet into position ...

... and away!

I hope it remembered to flap its wings!

So now there's just the one chick left to fledge.

Well, it doesn't hang about!  Within 15 seconds of the previous chick going, this one is up on the hole of the box looking out.

It gets into position ...

... and flies!

Now all we are left with are six unhatched eggs on the floor of the nest box - and perhaps one or two more that have been hidden in the nesting material.  We'll find out if there are any more when we clean out the nest box in the autumn.

So ends the most successful year we have had since we started this diary in 2001.  Out of 20 eggs laid in two of our boxes, 19 chicks fledged - an exceptionally high proportion.  In Box1, at least 15 eggs were laid by two females, but it appears that only one female was laying fertile eggs.

It's also been one of the most interesting years with competition for the nest boxes leading to many fascinating situations including several fights, a couple of which involved three birds which we have never seen before.
