Bluetit Diary    Apr 2012 (1)

Thursday 5th April 2012

So what's been happening in Box1?

There has been a pair of birds interested in Box1 for some time.  This shot was taken on Thursday 16th February and shows a typical exchange between the male, who goes in first, and the female.

The first nesting material was brought in three days later on Sunday 19th February.

She seemed to get herself into a bit of a muddle with it too!

Nothing newsworthy happened over the next few weeks - the whole nest making operation appears to have been even more chaotic than usual - perhaps this is a first year female?

Seen from the inside, the picture doesn't look any better.  I hope she knows what she is doing!

By the second half of March, much of the floor is covered.  (This was taken on Saturday 24th March.)

This is what the 'nest' looked like at the end of March - as you can see, there is still quite a lot to do.  She seems to come and go quite a lot but not much gets done!

We have decided to call this pair Bob and Becky.

Here Bob is encouraging Becky by giving her a tit-bit.

What's this then?  Whoever owns that beak, it looks pretty dangerous to a bluetit.

So it's a starling.  I hope it finds something better to do that to try and destroy this bluetit nest box!
