Bluetit Diary    Apr 2014 (2)

Tuesday 1st April 2014 (cont)

Again, we start with a bluetit entering the nest box.

She (it?) settles down on the nest cup.

She isn't at ease and keeps getting up to peer out of the nest box hole ...

... and then returning to the nest cup.

And this makes it clear that this bluetit is a female - a nesting wriggle!

Along comes bluetit number 2.

The first bird huddles down in the nest cup.

The second bird enters.  She doesn't have any food offering and her beak is open so she is clearly shouting at the first bird.

The shouting continues.

Finally it seems to be having an effect and the first bird starts to leave the nest box.

Suddenly she is gone!

Away she goes.

The second bird is now in control and moves to the nest cup.

Now she does a nesting wriggle - so the second bird is a female too!

She too occupies the nest cup.

A short while later she flies up to the exit ...

... and then she flies off too.

So currently, we have two females who think they have a claim to this nest box.  There is no sign of a male though - I hope there is at least one of them!
