Bluetit Diary    Apr 2014 (4)

Egg laying has started!

Here in Box1, you can just make out two eggs.  This means that the first egg was laid yesterday.  We have searched long and hard for a view of Georgie's first egg, but so far have not found  one.  Georgie has brought in so many feathers that even she must have difficulty seeing her eggs!

This is Pippa's first egg.  Her nest is much less feathered, though there is plenty of time for some to be brought in later.

I have already mentioned the possibility that there are two females interested in Box2.  Here is the start of another puzzling sequence.

This bird is clearly a female. (Males do not do nesting wriggles!)

Another bird comes into the nest box.

The incumbent bird huddles down, while the newcomer makes angry noises (do you see its open beak?)

Something outside seems to attract the newcomer's attention briefly.

The bird in the nest cup here is still the original bird.

Suddenly, she leaves the nest box.

Now the newcomer does a nesting wriggle.  So the second bluetit is a female too.

Which of them is Pippa is a complete mystery!

Another shot of Pippa with her egg!
