Bluetit Diary    Mar 2014 (1)

Saturday 1st March 2014

There were a couple of season firsts in Box1 today.

Box1 is the only nest box where a pair of bluetits are clearly seeing it as their home for the season.

Here the male crouches down to give the female more room to come inside.

Here she comes!

And of course, the male immediately leaves the nest box.

It all happens so quickly, we sometimes think the female is as puzzled by the whole procedure as we are.  However, this is standard practice among both blue and great tits so there must be some benefit to them in performing it.

A beautiful shot of one of the birds, probably the male, approaching Box1.

Clearly a nesting wriggle.  This was one of the firsts I promised.

And here is the second - the first nesting material brought into a nest box this season.

A few minutes later, she is back with some more moss.

Scattering the moss is a very haphazard process!

Today we have also had a bird in Box3.  Having eventually decided to leave it in place again this year we are hoping that it will be a success.

An overhead view.

This side mounted camera can produce beautiful pictures - particularly when there is some nesting material in the box so that the bird's feet are visible!

We'll see!
