Bluetit Diary    May 2015 (10)

Saturday 30th May, 2015

Today, the chicks in Box1 start to leave the nest box.  One went first thing this morning and the second last thing this evening.

At the start of the day, all six chicks in Box1 are still present.

This is Paul giving them a feed.

And this is Meg.  Look at the difference in their head feathers. Paul's are rough and rugged, Meg's are smooth.

It's 7 o'clock in the morning and a chick jumps up to look out of the next box - to the great consternation of the other chicks!

It looks as though the first chick is about to leave the nest.

Off it goes!

(Chick 1)

We assumed that the other chicks would follow shortly after, but at 5:20pm the other 5 chicks are still there - and not looking like they would be leaving today either!

They are still there at a quarter to eight so we decided that the five remaining chicks were likely to stay another night.

At a quarter past eight they were still all there ...

... when suddenly without warning a chick flew up the the hole.

It had a good look outside ...

... and in spite of the lateness of the day, it flew off ...

(Chick2)

... leaving just 4 chicks in the nest box.

And that was the state of play when the cameras switched off at about half past eight.
