Bluetit Diary    Jan 2018 (6)

Scruff is having another look at Box2.

But who's this outside.  Perhaps it is Scruff's partner.

Now all we have to work out is which is the male and which the female!

Normally, the first in the box would be the male and the timid one outside the female.  But is this a normal partnership?  After all, if the bird inside really is the old Scruff/Suzie/Spikey then she is an old hand!

Scruff doesn't seem in the least put out by the other bird on at the entrance, so these two are probably already a pair.

The newcomer soon flies off ...

... followed shortly after by Scruff.

Soon after a rather smart bluetit lands on the roof of the nest box.  Is this Scruff's partner?

It drops down to look into the nest box ...

... and the goes onto the entrance hole ...

... and goes inside the box.

Clearly this is not Scruff.  If it is Scruff's partner, as opposed to one of another pair, then we should see Scruff soon.

And here she is.  Just a few seconds later!

Inside she goes!

Scruff and her partner, for surely Scruff is the female, both in the box.

No sooner has Scruff entered, but her partner goes.

The first swap-over in Box2 this year!

Scruff looks out of the box for a short while before leaving it again.

Two and a half hours later there are a couple more swap-overs.  Each time it is clear that Scruff is the female.  This is the second of them.
