Bluetit Diary    May 2019 (17)

Saturday 25th May, 2019

Today started early as I had set things up to start at around 5.30am.

I am pleased to see that all four remaining chicks are still present.

It is interesting to see that both parents are still bringing food to the nest box.

Here is Andy with food for the chicks.

How they split their time between the chicks that have fledged and those that still remain in the nest box is a puzzle!

And here is Ann.

Both parents repeatedly brought food to the nest box chicks during this period.

One of the remaining chicks has a look out of the box.

The remaining three chicks show no interest at all in what it's doing.

This chick spent quite a while in the exit hole.  Every now and then it would drop back into the box, only to return to the hole a few seconds later.

Here it is back with the others.  It's the chick looking at the exit.

Suddenly, about 15 seconds later it went - just like that!

(Chick 6)

Four minutes later, the next chick went!

(Chick 7)

There are now just two chicks left inside the nest box.

Here you can see chick 8 being fed by Andy while it is perched on the nest box hole.  In spite of the food, it didn't take the plunge this time.

"More - more!"

Ten minutes later it tried again.  This time I thought it would go - but no!

The last chick is always the most timid one of the family.  This one is no different and keeps away from the hole, looking in the other direction.

Often, the last chick will snuggle up to a corner in the box, missing the closeness of the rest of its family.

Finally, the chick in the hole takes the plunge - and flies off into the big wide world.

It doesn't do badly considering this is its first flight!

(Chick 8)

As normal, the last chick doesn't want to know!

Twenty five minutes later, the last chick still hasn't even looked out of the nest box.

Eventually, it realises that it has to leave the box eventually.  I think this is the first time it has seen the outside world.

Again, as is traditional, before it goes it does a last poo - that is the white blob on the floor, just beneath its tail.

But no - it was all too much - it just can't pluck up the courage to leave the box - its home for all its short life.
