Bluetit Diary    May 2021 (2)

Wednesday 5th May, 2021

It looks as though there are now at least two unhatched eggs.

Yes - two unhatched eggs.

Another egg must have hatched.

There is still at least one unhatched egg.

Is this another piece of shell from the previously hatched egg, or has the last egg hatched?

It looks as though Mum is still eating the eggshells.

Clearly there is still at least one unhatched egg.

Again, it looks as though there is just the one egg to hatch.

Here comes trouble!

At least the chicks are too young to get out of the nest cup, so the woodpacker will not be able to reach them - I hope!

Woodie's having a good look inside the nest box.

Mum sits tight!

Woodie gives up.

At the end of the day, there is still one unhatched egg left.

Thursday 6th May, 2021

Five beaks are visible here in spite of the lump of moss obscuring much of the nest cup area.

I hope it will blow away soon. I can't get any good pictures with a lump of moss in the way!

Friday 7th May, 2021

Five or six beaks can just be made out here.

I think you can just make out six beaks here.

Definitely six beaks!

Saturday 8th May, 2021

A new day - but still the same old lump of moss blocking the view.

I don't like interfering, but I think I am going to have to if it doesn't fall away soon.

Oops! The woodie is back!

At least it hasn't (as yet) tried to peck a hole in the box.

At least it didn't stay long and left without any food for its chicks!

A friend of mine had a woodpecker drill right through the side of the box to get at the chicks!

There are five or six beaks here.

This looks like six beaks. At least having survived the first couple of days, there is now a good chance that they will all fledge.
