Bluetit Diary    May 2025 (5)

Wednesday 7th May, 2025

Today we have a little lesson in nest hygene.  It starts when a chick is fed.

The parent waits to see that the food is swallowed.  If it isn't, then it will be removed and given to another chick.

Usually, when the chick has swallowed the food item, it turns ...

... sticks its bottom in the air and produces a parcel of poo.  Note that this is a nicely wrapped parcel that doesn't run anywhere.

The parent - and both parents do this - carefully removes the parcel of poo ...

... and takes it out of the nest box, whereupon the chick reverts to its former position in the nest.

When the chicks are young, the female stays with them in the nest box overnight, covering them to keep them warm.  At some stage this becomes both unnecessary and a chore and the female sometimes moves to the side of the nest box so she can get some sleep away from the wriggling chicks.  Eventually, she leaves the nest box over night so she can get some rest!

I wanted to see what stage in this process had been reached, so I turned the camera (and light) on briefly at around 10pm.  You can see that Meg is still brooding the chicks overnight.
