Bluetit Diary    May 2025 (7)

Friday 9th May, 2025

For some time I have been trying to work out how to tell Meg and Max apart.  At last I think I have worked it out!

This is Meg.  The white band around her head is smooth and uniform.

This is Max whose white band is less even and which has a blue patch  in the middle of his neck.

Max feeding a chick and Meg sitting on the nest.

The chicks are developing rapidly.  They have reached the stage when they are starting to grow their wing feathers.  The pink patch is the area which gets feathers last as it will be under their wings when they fledge and won't matter too much.

You can also see that they already have the white band around their heads.

They are not very pretty at this stage are they?

Finally, here is another shot of all seven chicks.  They are doing well.  There seem to be plenty of caterpillars this year.

When you consider that the chicks only hatched out 10 or 11 days ago, their progress has been phenomenal!  They are due to fledge in another 10 or 11 days.
