Bluetit Diary    May 2026 (9)

Saturday 16th May 2026

All nine chicks still present.  Will they start fledging today?

Again, all nine chicks.  It is sometimes very difficult to get a picture showing all the chicks.

Having said that, here's another one!  None of them look eager to leave the nest.

Two and a half hours have passed, and still none of the chicks appears keen to go.  They are still all in the nest cup - though that has expanded somewhat as the chicks have grown and become more boisterous.

Another hour has passed and it doesn't look as though they will fledge today.

It's now an hour later and nothing has changed.

All nine chicks look very relaxed.  Perhaps my forecast of 17th May as the day they go is going to turn out to be right!

What's this!  Two hours have passed and now it looks as though at least one of the chicks is interested in the world outside the nest box.

Will it leave the nest?

It looks like it!  Once a chick has its claws outside the box, there's a good chance it will go the whole way and fly!

Not a good picture!

This one's no better.  It looks as though the chick has stalled!

Nearly three hours have passed since the chick flew the nest.  The 8 chicks that are left look as though they are settling down for another night in the nest box.

This is the last picture I took before shutting down for the night.  Clearly there will be no more departures today.  I will set the system to start at 5:30am tomorrow to make sure nothing is missed then!
